Playing outdoors is good for children because it simultaneously contributes to their physical development, mental health, and social skills. Children who play outside regularly move more, learn to handle risks better, and develop stronger concentration. Adventurous outdoor play, in which children are challenged and allowed to surpass themselves, further strengthens this effect. In this article, we explain why this works and how you, as a parent, municipality, or school, can encourage outdoor play.

Why is playing outside so important for children?

Playing outdoors is important for children because it stimulates their physical, social, and cognitive development simultaneously. Moving outside strengthens muscles and coordination, fresh air and daylight support sleep and concentration, and playing together with other children teaches them to communicate, negotiate, and deal with disappointment.

Children who play outside every day build not only a healthy body but also a resilient mind. They learn to solve problems independently, take small risks, and discover their own limits. This is something that a screen or a structured sports lesson rarely offers them in the same way. Free outdoor play gives children the space to be themselves, at their own pace and in their own way.

In addition, playing outdoors has a positive effect on children's mental health. Exercise in the fresh air reduces stress and helps children concentrate better, including in the classroom. It is no coincidence that schools and municipalities are increasingly investing in challenging outdoor play areas.

What are the benefits of adventurous outdoor play?

Adventurous outdoor play offers more benefits than ordinary outdoor play because it actively challenges children. Children learn to assess risks, overcome fear, develop perseverance, and build self-confidence. Adventurous play also stimulates imagination and creativity in a way that structured activities do not.

Think of climbing, jumping, balancing, or riding a bicycle or scooter. These types of activities require focus, courage, and practice. Children who regularly engage in adventurous outdoor play are better able to cope with setbacks and are quicker to try something new. They learn that falling is part of learning and that getting up is normal.

Adventurous play also strengthens the social bond between children. They motivate each other, help each other, and celebrate each other's successes. These are exactly the social skills that come in handy later at school and in life.

How does adventurous play stimulate motor development?

Adventurous play stimulates motor development by actively training gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. Children who climb, jump, cycle, or ride a scooter or skateboard train their bodies in a way that is more versatile than standard outdoor play.

Gross motor skills concern the large movements of the body: running, jumping, balancing, and cycling. These skills form the basis for fine motor skills and cognitive development. Children who are comfortable in their own bodies also learn to write, draw, and perform other fine motor tasks more easily.

Through adventurous play, children also learn to trust their bodies. They discover how fast they can ride, how high they can jump, and how to maintain their balance on a slope. This requires repetition and practice, which strengthens motor development step by step.

Create a asphalt PumpTrack is bovendien duurzaam en veilig.

How much time do children need to play outside per day?

Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to intensive physical activity per day, and a large part of that is best done outdoors. For younger children aged 3 to 5, physical activity experts even recommend more than 3 hours of active movement per day, spread throughout the day.

Those 60 minutes don't have to be consecutive. A ten-minute bike ride to school, half an hour of playing outside after school, and an evening walk all count. The important thing is that children get regular exercise and that being outdoors becomes a natural part of the day.

In practice, many children do not meet that daily physical activity goal. Screen time is increasing and unstructured outdoor play is decreasing. This makes it all the more important that schools, municipalities, and parents actively ensure attractive outdoor play areas in the neighborhood.

Which outdoor play areas are the most challenging for children?

Challenging playgrounds are places where children can surpass themselves. That doesn't mean dangerous, but stimulating. A climbing frame that seems just a little too high, a ramp that is just a little too steep, or a course that requires just a bit more technique. These kinds of challenges ensure that children keep coming back and take things a step further each time.

Multifunctional play areas, where children can cycle, skate, climb, and run in the same place, are the most popular. They attract children of different ages and skill levels and encourage social interaction. View our completed projects for inspiration on what is possible in your municipality or neighborhood.
